ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Since its inception in 1980, our festival has grown and evolved from the Busan Korean Short Film Festival, to become the Busan Asian Short Film Festival in 2000 and eventually the Busan International Short Film Festival in 2010. It was the first festival of its category in South Korea.

COMPETITIONS & AWARDS

Ahead of its 2018 edition, BISFF has been designated an OSCAR®-qualifying festival by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. The winners of the festival’s qualifying awards (Grand Prix for Best Picture in International Competition and Grand Prix for Best Picture in Korean Competition) will be eligible for consideration in the Animated Short Film/Live Action Short Film categories of the Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run, provided the movies comply with the Academy rules.

BISFF has four competitive sections:
– International Competition
– Korean Competition
– NETPAC (a prize for the best Asian short in the two Competitions, as part of the Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema)
– Operation Kino (a short documentary-making contest for students from Busan’s cinema universities)
